National University of Defense Technology, formerly known as the Military Engineering Institute of the People's Liberation Army of China established in Harbin in 1953, also known as the renowned "Harbin Military Engineering Institute", was one of the 156 key construction projects of the first Five-Year Plan of the country. It was also one of the 20 key universities determined by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1959 and was among the first batch of institutions approved by The State Council to confer master's and doctoral degrees. It is one of the first 22 institutions in the country to pilot graduate schools, among the first batch of institutions to be included in the national "211 Project" construction plan, the only military institution to be included in the national "985 Project" construction, and also the only military institution to be supported in the first round of the national "Double First-Class" construction.
