The Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences was established in 1953. It is one of the first research institutes newly founded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Its founder was Mr. Li Xun, a renowned physical metallurgist in China. In May 1999, it was integrated with the Institute of Metal Corrosion and Protection, Chinese Academy of Sciences to establish a new "Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences". In 2017, the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China established the National Research Center for Materials Science in Shenyang based on the Institute of Metal Research. In 2019, the Shichangxu Advanced Materials Innovation Center was established, and in 2020, the Center for Materials Corrosion and Protection was founded.
