The 52nd Research Institute of China North Industries Group Corporation (Ningbo Branch of China Ordnance Science Research Institute and Inner Mongolia Metal Materials Research Institute, hereinafter referred to as "52nd Institute") was established in 1958 and mainly engages in comprehensive research on metal materials. In 1992, the State Planning Commission, the General Staff Department and the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense approved the research direction and tasks of the 52nd Research Institute, determining the category as "Class I Military Product Backbone". Its research direction was "theoretical, applied and special process research on metal materials for weapons and metal-non-metal composite materials, as well as experimental techniques and simulation testing methods for material performance".
